Excel shows formula, not result

Help! I have a conditional formula that will not show the result. It shows
only the formula. Right now, the formulas box in the view tab under
tools/options is UNCHECKED and the formula still shows. I've tried checking
the box and it still shows. I really need my result in the cell and the day
is getting away from me...(Excel 2000)

This may seem obvious, but is there an " = " sign in the cell before your
formula...?

Your cell may be formatted as "text", format as "general" or "number" then
hit F2 and Enter.

yes, it has an "=" sign before the formula. Someone just suggested checking
the format so I will check that... Thank you

It seems strange, that's all. Even with a cell formatted as text, the
formula should still return the result... Try entering the formula with
ctrl+shift+enter.

Another possible option when Excel is showing Formulas is that the option to
show "Formulas" is turned on.
Tools | Options | "View Tab"
With a check on "Formulas"
One can toggle between both views with Ctrl + ` (Character to left of
number 1, usually with ~ character)

It is strange... I formated it as a number and it worked. It is a huge
spreadsheet (over 7000 rows) so maybe that has something to do with it. but
it is working now so that's okay with me :)

I may be wrong but I think it depends on when the cell was formatted. If the
cell was pre-formatted as text and you enter the formula then the formula
will show as text, if however you format the cell after the formula was
entered then the result will be text not the formula but if you re-enter the
formula while the cell is formatted as text then the formula will turn back
into text.
