merge affecting dsum calculation

Is there anyway to make a merged cell behave like the cells it has
replaced? I am running a dsum calculation on a table similar to the
one below and whilst it works ok when i search by field1=7 and
field2=100 it doesnt work when i run field1=7 and field2=140 (field 1
is a merged cell 3 rows deep). Is there anyway to make the merged cell
cover all three rows (other than entering 7 into each row and then
hiding the lower 7s and using outline etc to make the cells appear as
tho merged)?

Formula:
--------------------
field1 | field 2 | field3
7 | 100 | 25
| 140 | 20
| 180 | 18
--------------------

many thanks
