.xls files become scrap objects - .shs files
This same question has been asked in the applications error forum
have gone back 2 months and all files in these folders are now scrap objects??? using office xp (2002) fully updated as of this morning (Jan, 30, 2006). User claims that these files were normal and could be opened a couple of weeks ago. my backups show the files in Nov. as being .shs files. How do you, if it is possible, change them back. I have tried the following - none of which works: change the file extension - not easy to do with .shs - didn't work drag the scrap object onto a new excel doc - didn't work tried newer AND older versions of excel - didn't work screamed at it like a lunatic - laughed at me - so punched the screen - hand now hurts - still doesn't work HELP thanks for in advance for any help. any additional info needed by you - let me know thanks sali |
.xls files become scrap objects - .shs files
I can create scrap objects by selecting a range and dragging it to my windows
desktop. (Yeah, I had to play around with excel's window size first.) After it's on the desktop, if I double click on it, some kind of script runs (and I get prompted to allow it with all that security stuff). If I allow it to run, I get a little view window and the scrap opens up in excel (or what ever application I was in when I created it). (I'm using winXP home and xl2003.) But these are not normal run of the mill files. You actually have to do something to create them. I could rename the scrap.shs file by shelling to DOS: Windows start button|Run CMD (win nt/xp) command (win98) And traversing to the folder that contains the scrap. Then use the old DOS REName command: ren scrap.shs scrap.xls But don't get your hopes up. When I tried to open the renamed file, excel said it wasn't the correct format. ====== I think I'd copy one of the .shs files to a different computer. Try double clicking on it there. If it opens correctly, then maybe the original user disabled the scripting program associated with .shs. If that test works, you may want to post to another newsgroup (*scripting*???) to see if they can help. === I would ask the user how he/she created those files--maybe even watch a bit.
