Is there a way to identify saturday and sunday automatically

I have a worksheet with the dates 1 to 31 across the top of the page for the
12 months of the year, is there a way to have excel hilight or colour code
Saturdays and Sundays on each worksheet automaitcally?

Try:

=OR(WEEKDAY(A1)=1,WEEKDAY(A1)=7)

How do you know which month? For the sake of argument, let's say it is in
A2, then you can use conditional formatting on the cells A1:AE1 with a
formula of

=WEEKDAY(A1,2)5

then just format to suit.
