Improve consistency in how Excel and Word 2003 close.
 
If you have 1 Word document open, the "BIG X" closes only the current
document. (It behaves the same way as if you want to close one document with
the "little "X".) In Excel, if you hit the "big X", you close all open
spreadsheets. I don't care which way you go, but do it the same way in each.
One could argue in either direction, but this fuzziness has lead me to lose
a lot of work, particularly when I am rushing to meet a deadline. Yes, it's
my error, but....

Inconsistent yes, but if you have made any changes then you will be prompted
to save so you do get a second chance. It doesn't stop you hitting 'Don't
save' though and losing your data.

Quite right!
Except that even the "Do you really want to lose all your data?" message
becomes comfusing if in WORD it means "lose this document" and in Excel it
means "lose not only this workbook but all the others that happen to be
open". Woops! Forgot that one! It's gone. Start again.
The beauty of Windows, perhaps taken for granted by users who didn't work in
DOS days and before, was that all programs that run under it were to give
computer users an environment where they could jump from one program to
another, understand the commands, and expect consistency. Okay, this is a
little problem, but what we should all be striving for is excellence, not
"sort of good".

You may want to turn off tools|options|windows in taskbar.

Then excel will behave like xl97 did/does.

It may be enough to remind you that closing the application means closing the
application.

When I close Excel with application "x" I get a prompt for each and every
workbook I have open and have made changes to.

Thanks Dave (and others).
I don't think it solves the problem, but then, the problem shouldn't be
blown out of proportion. It's not a bug, just an inconsistency, and from the
get go, I confessed that it was a user error.
