I wish to limit data within a range of cells to a certain date period, say
one particular month of the year. If the input falls outside the allowed date
then I want a dialog box to appear advising the user to re-enter the date
within the allowed date range

Data validation
 

DataValidation, select the Date option and you can set a start and end
date.
