Why Excel 2003 can't stop slececting/hihgtlighting cells?

Sometimes when I open Excel 2003 worksheet, I can not stop Excel from
highlighting the cells as I move the cursor. The worksheet does not respond
even I hit "Esc" or "Enter" key or click the buttons on the mouse. Windows
tast manager shows the Excel is "running". I downloaded all the required
updates for Microsoft Office. However, the problem still persists.
I appreciate it if anybody knows how to fix the problem. Thanks!

Why Excel 2003 can't stop slececting/hihgtlighting cells?

Pressing F8 once or twice to remove ALT or EXT from the
statusbar is not likely to help because the problem is noticed
by merely moving the cursor around, not by clicking or selecting
in any manner.

See http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/ghosting.txt
for some help with the problem.
