Square cells in Excel
 

How can I make the ceels in Excel exactly square? There seems to be no fixed
relationship between column width and row height. I find a 1:6 relationship
coming close, but others state it must be 1:5,29. Is there a formula,
setting, or font size dependent relationship to be used?

I use the default 12.75 Row Height and a 1.71 Column Width.........

Hi Chuck,

This doesn't provide square cells. Check the 127.5 and 17.1 sizes, they make
it more clear.
Apart from this being not correct, it also doesn't seem to be a "one size
fits all" solution, but a self-made setting satisfying one user.
I'm afraid we need some macro checking the cells corners positions counting
pixels or something like that.

Anybody?

I found a simple way to do it quite neat, without being exact:

Start drawing a rectangle, pushing the ALT-key to snap to the top left
corner of, say, cell B2, then release the ALT-key and push the SHIFT-key to
make it a square, size doesn't matter yet.
Right-click the square, click "Format Autoshape", select the "Size" tab and
fill in the required size of the square, make sure Height and Width are
equal. Select the "Properties" tab and select "Move but don't size with
cells". Push OK.
Select the worksheet, adjust the column width until the right side of cell
B2 falls together with the right side of the square (you see the line
change), adjust the row height until the lower edge of the cell falls
together with the lower side of the square.
