Can anybody help I have been trying to use auto shape so that the cells
can still be used behind or inside the shape, like when you use a
template and the headers are in rounded boxes not just tex boxes but
boxes that actually contain cells. Thanks for you time.

try this, it may be what you are looking for:
once you have your shape on the screen
click on the shape then right click and select format shape
colors and lines
select no fill or if you want to play around select semi transperant
and then work with the colors and stuff to get what you want
