When I type in valid functions and hit "enter," the cell displays the formula
instead of the answer.

How can I get it to display the answer instead??

make sure the number format for that cell is not text (General??).

Make sure you start your formula with an equal sign.

Make sure you're not looking at formulas:
tools|options|view tab|uncheck Formulas (if it's checked)
