Share Workbook is grayed out in the Tools menu

Why is "Share Workbook" grayed out? What do I need to do differently to use
that function? I'm using MS Office Pro 2003

Is that option always greyed out? Or is just greyed out for this workbook?

Start a new workbook and test it out.

If it's always greyed out, you can try resetting that toolbar:

Tools|Customize|toolbars tab
select worksheet menu bar
click Reset

Did that work?

I was able to use "Share Workbook" in a new file, but why would that function
not be available in the existing file? Is it because I didn't create it
originally? If I save it in a particular way, could I enable Share Workbook?

Thanks!

This is a guess...

The developer of that workbook may have not wanted you to share that file and
disabled that option.

You could try this to see if it enables that option.

Tools|Customize|toolbars tab
select the worksheet menu bar
click reset

You will lose any other changes to that toolbar, though.

Then try tools|share workbook
to see if it's available.

And one (maybe better) guess.

When you look at the titlebar, do you see [Read-Only] after the workbook name?

If you do, then you have to open the file not in readonly mode.

That could mean to wait for another user to close the file

or it could mean that you could use windows explorer to change that readonly
property

or it could mean that you don't have write ability to the drive that holds that
file (you'll have to save it somewhere else first--or get the permissions
changed).

These are all good suggestions - this gives me a good idea of how to avoid
this problem in future. Share Workbook still isn't available, so I may just
have to rebuild the file - thanks for your help!

I know this is a really old posting, but I wanted to add what I just found
because I think anyone having this problem may find it helpful.....

You CANNOT share a work book that has a list. First you must convert the
list to a range DATA, LIST, CONVERT TO RANGE. Then you can share the work
book.
