No Buttons to Control Subtotal Levels!?!?
 

When I apply subtotals to my data, I no longer get the 3 buttons in
the upper left corner of my spreadsheet. These are the buttons that
allow you to access various levels of detail. They are labeled 1, 2, &
3. When I group data 2 buttons appear. However, the subtotals
function is not triggering the control buttons and the grouping buttons
don't control the subtotals. Please help.

I've never seen xl fail to put those outlining symbols in, but maybe you could
try this:

Tools|Options|View Tab|make sure "Outline Symbols" is checked.
