In Win 2003 Excel with a list of columns, one column has numerous blank cells
and the adjacent column is blank (except for the header). With autofilter on, a value is selected from the drop down box. The first set of rows with the selected value displays, along with rows of other values not selected. The subsequent rows with the selected value are not moved to the top, but reside within the remaining rows. Hi Jo
It sounds as though you don't have a header row. Remove Autofilter. Insert a new row 1, and put headings at the top of each column. Apply Autofilter and use, and you should see all occurrences of Bob, (well up to 1000 anyway, but that's another problem!!!) Excel assumes you only want to filter down as far as the first blank cell.
To autofilter on the whole range, select all the cells you want to filter on and click on autofilter Best rgds Chris Lav "Jo M" wrote in message ... I do have a header row. Chris's response is helpful, but his "fix" doesn't
work. "Roger Govier" wrote: Hi Jo It sounds as though you don't have a header row. Remove Autofilter. Insert a new row 1, and put headings at the top of each column. I agree, Excel does assume I only want to filter down as far as the first
blank cell byond the cell where the selected item is found. Your workaround did NOT function however. It gave the same results as before. I recall autofilter working differently (correctly?) in Excel '97. Maybe, I getting too old. -- LOL "Chris Lavender" wrote: Excel assumes you only want to filter down as far as the first blank cell. When you try Chris's suggestion, then filter to show Bob, what is the color of
the row number of those rows that don't seem to be part of the filter. I'm betting that they're still grey, and you didn't select your whole range. Jo M wrote: I do have a header row. You did it, I just didn't get it. When I REMOVED autofilter, selected the
area on the sheet, and re-established autofilter, it worked just fine. THANKS! "Chris Lavender" wrote: Excel assumes you only want to filter down as far as the first blank cell. Appreciate your response Dave. When selected, the rows for the desired item
are blue, all others are black. However, you caused me to re-read Chris' response. I had misinterpreted it. I REMOVED autofilter, selected the desired area, activated autofilter, and it then worked as desired. Dave, thanks for stimulating me to see outside the box. I try never to let excel guess the range I want--not in filter|autofilter, not
in sorts, not in charts, not in pivottables, not in.... Jo M wrote: Appreciate your response Dave. When selected, the rows for the desired item are blue, all others are black.
