how do i keep a running balance in excel?
 

Assuming column A is where you enter the data, in B1 enter =A1

In B2 enter =IF(A2="","",B1+A2)

Drag/copy down as far as you think will need, depending upon the expected data
range in column A.

If, by "running balance" you mean accumulate in one cell, there are ways to do
that, but you will have no "paper trail" for checking entries.
