Automatically number a worksheet

I would like to format a cell on a worksheet that I use as a written
proposal form creating a unique identifier for each proposal. Can I
format that cell to select a sequential string of numbers similar to
having a date come up when you open a worksheet?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe something at J.E. McGimpsey's site would help:
