Lost password for password protected Excel file

I have an Excel file in .xls format last saved in Excel 2016 which is
password protected that I need to open.

Would anyone be able advise of an application that can do this that and
is preferably free?

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying the file requires the password to open it? If so, and you are
the legit author, post a link to download the file. Add your email address to
the file's Properties before uploading it so it can be emailed directly to you.

I have a macro I found a long time ago for unlocking Excel workbooks, don't think it works on the VBA window if that's password protected but it does work on the excel sheet.

found it on http://blog.yodalearning.com/2016/05...cel-using-vba/

hope this helps
