Unable to freeze panes
 

Another mystery with Excel 2010.

I have an existing spreadsheet in which I had frozen first column and
top row. The freeze has disappeared and I cannot reinstate it. When I
pull down the Freeze Panes button it has only two freeze options:
Freeze Top Row and Freeze First Column. No way to freeze both.

Is this possibly connected to the other problem I had with Desktop
settings upsetting Excel? If not, what am I missing.

row, one to freeze the columns.

to freeze rows and columns is only one step:
Select a single cell and freeze pane - the columns to the left of the
selected cell and the rows above the selected cell will be frozen.
E.g. you select C3: Columns(A:B) and Rows(1:2) will be frozen.

why does 2013 not have windowed open file panes?

They are all stuck maximized, and separate full excel windows pop to
the desktop front for each file. This is like some Windows 8
consideration thing. Some of us have multiple displays, and this new
pair-of-dimes is a departure from a windowed motif. Not necessarily
affecting multi-display setups per se, but still, one has to adjust one's
ways and means yet one more time... how quaint... not!

sorry Mick, but I didn't realize that the problem is based on Win8 and
Office2013.
I'm still working with Office2007 and Office2010 and Vista as OS.

Sorry, back where I started. I can freeze one or the other but not
both.

FWIW, this spreadsheet was originally created and frozen in Excel
2003. I don't know how it got unfrozen in 2010 but whatever it was I
can't seem to undo it.

my Excel 2010 has three buttons:
1. Freeze sheet pane = that worked as I posted before
2. Freeze Top Row
3. Frist first columns

I'm really perplexed. Not only can I not freeze both row and column, I
can only freeze the first column heading wheras I previously had
frozen the headings of the first three columns.

Something very weird going on here.

My Freeze Pane button only drops down into Unfreeze, Freeze Row, and
Freeze column.

After you posted this, I tried it once more and lo and behold there
was a Freeze Pane selection on the drop down. I selected that and it
worked fine. However, when I closed the file and reopened it the
freeze was gone and now there is no Freeze Pane selection on the drop
down.

Whatever it is, it is a problem with this specific spreadsheet. I can
create a new one and it has a Freeze Panes option on the Freeze Panes

Whatever it is, it is a problem with this specific spreadsheet. I can
create a new one and it has a Freeze Panes option on the Freeze Panes
drop down.

It seems to have been a corrupted file. I copied and pasted everything
to the new file and it works fine.

sorry Mick, but I didn't realize that the problem is based on Win8 and
Office2013.
I'm still working with Office2007 and Office2010 and Vista as OS.

I am not in Windows 8, but my excel 2013 behavior in Windows 7 is what
I referred to. Sorry I ddin't make that clear when I suggested why it
might be that way.

I had a similar problem and found out that it was the view. Are you in the normal view?

Thanks! Even though I had not 'froze' anything I tried what you said and clicked the corner cell between A1 & 1 to select all, then I unfroze, saved file, put the cursor in the cell I wanted and... viola ... 'freeze panes' magically was there now. Peace.
