Excel formula issues, wierd..

Hello all..
Ok, I am working in a new spreadsheet that was designed in 97 but I am
now using 2000. Not sure if that is the problem. BUt everytime I open
the spreadsheet or change any data, I have to go to not one, not two but
all formulas in the spreadsheet and f2 then enter to clear it before it
will recalculate. I dont understand it. For example, I am just using
a sum.. =sum(a2:a8) in a9. i can change any one of a2:a8 and a9
will NOT change unless i f2 then enter in a9. It is happening with
multiple formulas in multiple cells. any ideas....????

Thanks
schlep

From xl2003's help:

Press F9 Calculates formulas that have changed since the last calculation, and
formulas dependent on them, in all open workbooks. If a workbook is set for
automatic calculation, you do not need to press F9 for calculation.

Press SHIFT+F9 Calculates formulas that have changed since the last calculation,
and formulas dependent on them, in the active worksheet.

Press CTRL+ALT+F9 Calculates all formulas in all open workbooks, regardless
of whether they have changed since last time or not.

Press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+F9 Rechecks dependent formulas, and then calculates all
formulas in all open workbooks, regardless of whether they have changed since
last time or not.

(I think that that last one was added in xl2002.)

Have you tried all these?

If they all failed, maybe just:

select all the worksheets
select all the cells (ctrl-a, twice in xl2003)
edit|replace
what: =
with: =
replace all

Maybe it'll wake up excel's calculation engine.
