moving mouse lighlights cells

a friend can not select menu items. when mouse moves around the screen,
cells are highlighted. It looks as if the left mouse button is continuously
pressed, though mouse works in other programs fine. It is set to operate as
a left handed mouse (left handed person). The mouse is new to my friend, she
downloaded MS Intelimouse driver with no change. It does this with any file
opened and with new file.

A common cause of this is that you are in "Extended" or "Add" mode.

If you see "EXT" or "ADD" down on the status bar try hitting F8 key a couple
of times.

F8 will will toggle you in and out of Extended mode. SHIFT + F8 will put you
in "ADD" mode.

If you are using a wheel-mouse tap the wheel a couple times.
