Copy and paste?

You can actually open a .xls file in MSWord.

But before you do this, copy the .xls file to a new name and open that new
name.xls

If you save the .xls file inside MSWord, you can destroy all your work (and if
you have MSWord's autosave turned on, you may not notice it until it's too
late!)
