Converting numbers formatted as text to numbers

I have a spreadsheet with long numbers formatted as text (16 digits). When
I convert them to numbers the resulting numbers has the first 15 digits
correct and the rest are zero's. Can someone explain what is happening and
if this is a hard limitation?
