To amplify just a bit:
WinXL97/00/02/03 and MacXL98/01/v.X/04 have exactly the same file formats and can all read Excel Workbook files. Each has slightly different features, both within and across OS platforms, but features not contained in earlier/cross-platform versions are simply ignored.
