How do I get default menus back in Excel?
 

When customizing a toolbar, a tried to create a button for Goal Seek by
dragging it from the menu to to the toolbar. At that point it disappeared
completely, appearing on neither the toolbar nor the menu. Using the "Reset
menu and toolbar usage data" button under customize has failed to bring it
back, and I have no way to use the Goal seek function now.

I created buttons in this way with the "Hide rows" menu choice successfully
in the past. Unfortunately, they have disappeared completely now as well
when I tried to use the "Reset menu and toolbar usage data" button. I cannot
hide rows as this action is completely gone (off the menu as well).

Paul,

I'm not sure what you're referring to. You're in Customize -- the Commands
tab?. If you're dragging buttons from there onto any toolbar (one of your
custom toolbars, or a standard Excel toolbar), the button should also remain
in the dialog box as well. If you've dragged a button off an Excel toolbar,
you can reset it to it's factory configuration by using the Toolbars tab,
selecting the toolbar (blue bar across it, not the checkbox), and clicking
Reset.

Not all commands available on the worksheet menu bar are available in the
Customize dialogue box (why I don't know). Two examples are the "hide rows
and columns" commands, as well as "goal seek" command. I've found however
that while in Customize you can go to a pull down menu on the worksheet menu
bar, grab a command you want, and drag it over to a tool bar you have open in
your current view. The shortcoming of this method seems to be that it is
then gone from the pull down menu. There doesn't seem to be a way to "copy"
it over.

Anyway, your advice did ultimately help. Since the worksheet menu bar is
actually a form of tool bar (did not realize this at first), it can be reset
with the button you allude to below.

Try going under View / Tools / Customize
Then to the Commands tab
Then go down to Built in Menus and select it.
On the right hand side drag Format up to the Menu.
Remember which one is the old Format and which is the new.
Close customize.
See if your new Format works. If so go back into
customize and drag the old Format menu item off (dragging
and dropping on the worksheet gets rid of it)

it over.

Once you drag the "hide rows" button to your Toolbar, you can reset the
Worksheet Menu Bar to replace the "hide rows".

The moved button will stay on the Toolbar.
