Default how do I add accents for foreign words when using excel?

I am writing a verb table using excel and the language in use is mainly
portuguese. How do I insert accents where required withoutbthe symbols that I
can use in Word?

Insert - Symbol should do it. There are keyboard shortcuts, too. Alt +
0232, for example, will give you è, an e with an accent grave. You need
to use the numeric keyboard to enter the digits, not the top row
numbers.

Depending upon your version of Excel......newer than XL97 you should have
Symbol on your Insert menu.

InsertSymbol and select the font and symbol you want.

If you are running an earlier version, you can open the Windows Character Map
and pick from there.

Chip Pearson has a SYMBOLIZER add-in that works well.
