New Router, Excel problem.. are they related!

I have just organised the installation of a Netgear Router to connect
my 'home' computer to my office computer via a wireless system. The
Home machine is my main machine.

I have Excel accounts files in my office which I would like to access
and work on in my home in the evening. I have no problem opening the
file but they are 'read only' when accessed this way and no, when I
access them directly in the office.

I notice also that accessing the Windows environment is not possible,
contact administrator etr. How do I access the files within the
Windows folder.

I have XP Pro.

It sounds as if you haven't "shared" the folder with the files in question
with Write or Change rights, but just Read. Right click on the folder in
Windows Explorer and select Sharing and Security.
