Copying hard drives - help please
 

I have a spare computer which I will call 'B'. 'B's harddrive is blank
apart from the op. system.
I want to copy the entire contents of computer 'A's hard drive to the
harddrive of 'B' including all the programs and files.

How do I connect the two computers, and carry out the transfer ?

The op. system in 'A' is Win 3.1 with no internet facilty.

I use a third computer 'C' for internet use.

And if you decide to purchase any program to mirror your harddrives, make sure
it works with your versions of windows. (Win3.1 is pretty old.)

You may also want to consider removing the harddrive and placing it into the
other pc, then copying files from disk to disk, then putting the the harddrive
back into the original pc.

Another alternative. You may want to consider getting a null modem cable--to
connect the two pc's using the serial ports. If you visit your local pc hobby
shop, they may be able to manufacture one for you pretty cheaply (or search
google and make your own--some telephone wire and a couple connectors and a
soldering gun would be required.)

A long time ago, I used an oldddddd version of LapLink to do the same thing. In
fact, I believe LapLink comes with a multi-connectorized cable.

You could look for some program like that--but check the OS requirements before
you buy (eBay???).

If he goes this route, he will have to be sure that the Bios can support it
(any machine with 3.1 will have an old Bios as well), and the drive will
have to be designated as a slave (usually jumpers) before the copy, and back
to a master after.
