What is the capacity of charactors in a cell?

A cell can contains 32K characters, although only about 1K can be
displayed.

Just to add to Chip's reply...

If you sprinkle alt-enter (to force a new line within the cell) every 80 or 100
characters, you can see lots more than the documented 1024 characters.
