Hi,
I am running DFS between two W2K3 servers linked via WAN in two different countries. DFS appears to be working fine and replicating through all files and Dir. Until Excel files start changing thier names to alfanumeric like F3CCB580. Microsoft appears to have a hot fix for same which I applied as per the feedback from another article posted here (ms article ID: 823230) however this didn't help and I have to live with this ongoing pain. PLS HELP......... |

This is just background. (I don't know enough about DFS/W2K3 servers to offer
any real advice). When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8 characters--no extension). If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will rename the funny named file to the original's name. Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical problems. Maybe temporarily disabling the antivirus software would be the easier thing to test. If that doesn't help, maybe there was a permissions change??? Just a curiosity question...
If you connect to the drive directly (instead of DFS), do you still have the same problem? Maybe it's DFS? (and maybe a different newsgroup could help more--you may want to search google for similar problems.) Bill wrote: Thnx Dave..... Dave:
Any luck in determining the cause of renamed Excel files to the Alphaneric? I am having the same problems. I am also suffering from older files saving over newer ones. Word and Excel are my main concerns. I have a Windows Server 2003 OS communicating with Windows Server 2000 utilizing the DFS and FRS and I thought it was an intercompatibility problem between the OS that was causing the problem. After reading your post, I realize it must be something else. What is your DFS setup? "Dave Peterson" wrote: This is just background.
