Excel error message

I have an Excel file on my desktop. When I double click on it, Excel
opens but I get a series of similar error messages. The message is:

'C:\Documents.xls'could not be found. Please check the spelling of the
file name and verify that the file location is correct.

If you are trying to open the file from the list of most recently used
files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed,
moved, or deleted.

The same message appears after clicking the OK button but only the file
name is the beginning sentence is different. This happens about 7-8
times. None of the file names in the error messages exist.

The file location is correct and I am not opening the file from the
most recently used files on the File menu. However, I may have renamed
the file. Regardless of that, how do I get rid of these error messages
so that the file will load?

When I open Excel first, and then open this file, there is no problem.

Sometimes one of these works:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

It sounds to me like you've changed something to do with your XLStart
folder. Check this article.

Dave,

Thanks, Dave. Resetting the Excel registry worked.
