i typed 1 on cell A1 , and drag the square around the cell but it fills the
below cells with the number 1 instead of 2,3,4,5,6,................. Please help Thanks |
if you want to drag down you have to fill atleast two cells. i.e. 1 and 2
and then highlight both and then drag down(or drag right) otherwise use edit-fill and give the parameters M.L wrote in message ... i typed 1 on cell A1 , and drag the square around the cell but it fills the below cells with the number 1 instead of 2,3,4,5,6,................. Please help Thanks |
Hi, Or you can right click on the black square, drag down and select fill series upon release if that helps. Put "2" in 'A2', and drag it down after selecteion.
If you already have contents in column 'B' say till row number 34. If you select 'A1:A2' and double-click the cross at the bottom of A2, it will fill incremented data till 'A34" |
Try typing 1 in cell A1, 2 in cell A2, then highlight A1 + A2, then grab the
corner and drag down. "M.L" wrote: i typed 1 on cell A1 , and drag the square around the cell but it fills the below cells with the number 1 instead of 2,3,4,5,6,................. Please help Thanks |
Try putting 2 in the next cell, select both cells and then drag down.
--or-- After you type the 1, hold down Ctrl as you drag down. -- tj "M.L" wrote: i typed 1 on cell A1 , and drag the square around the cell but it fills the below cells with the number 1 instead of 2,3,4,5,6,................. Please help Thanks |
Try putting 2 in B1, selecting A1 and B1 and doing what you did before.

To fill a series, Excel needs to know the pattern to follow. Inserting 1 and
dragging down is the same as copying. Insert 2 in A2, select A1 and A2, then drag. Alternately, if you have a large number of cells to fill, you can used Edit Fill Series Select Series in Column, Type is Linear, Step value is 1, Stop value is the last number you want to appear. You can also choose a different step (e.g. 2) and Excel will increment subsequent cells by this number, starting with the number you inserted in the cell to start the fill in.
