subtotals
 

I am having a problem with subtotaling in excel 2003.

i have a page with about 60 families, each having a few kids. i want to
subtotal by family the total amount.
so when i do data subtotal, by family, sum amount it takes a very long
time to subtotal - it actually does one family at a time.
the status bar says inserting subtotals then it calculates, and then
the subtotal for one family shows then it does the same thing for every
family.

in differnet versions that i have worked on it just went really quickly
- subtotaled everyone at the same time.

anyone know what is going on???
