everytime i enter a number into a cell excel converts it into a date i need

Select the range. From menu select FormatCells and forma that to General.

Post some examples of the numbers if Jacob's re-format does not fix it.
If you enter 5/5 or 5-5 Excel will treat as a date. Those types of data must have pre-formatting of TEXT or precede the number with an apostrophe.
