Filenames ending with :1 and :2
 

I don't know how this happened....

I have two documents that open at the same time (one has a :1 and the other
a :2 at the end of the file name) When I make a change to one, the change
automatically happens to the other. How do I close these documents and get
back to working with the original/main document? Thanks.

You haven't got two documents open, you've opened two windows on the same
document.
Close one (not with the red X at the top right which closes the whole
instance of Excel, but with the smaller blue X just below it), then save the
workbook. Reopen & you'll just see the one window.

Hi,

At some time in the past either by accident or design someone has entered

Window/New Window.


Close one of the windows and save and all will be well

And by the way, you close one window by the "X" in the upper right corner,
not by File/Close!

Just to add another way to close one of the windows...

Select the one you don't want and hit ctrl-F4.

Then save the workbook--or you may be doing it again.

Good point but OP please note it isn't the big X in the top right corner,
that closes the application and not the window, it's the lower of the 2 X's
in the upper right.
