How do you insert one cell by itself. Not a line or a column but a single
cell. In previous versions we had the ability to shift left or right I can't
find that

What happens if you right|(!) a cell and choose "Insert" (or is it, maybe,
"add") ?

Please think about this logically. The whole concept of Excel is it's grid
structure. i.e Columns and rows. How can you possibly expect to insert a
cell without a row and column!

Do you think you may be thinking about inserting comments?

If that is the case then right click and insert comment.

The function about which the OP was asking inserts one or more cells and
gives a choice from 4 options:
Shift cells right
Shift cells down
Entire row
Entire column

In Excel 2003 this insert facility is available by highlighting the cell or
cells where the insert is required, and either using the Insert menu/ Cells
....
or by right-clicking and choosing Insert ...

The OP talked about "In previous versions ..." but didn't say which version
he had been using previously, nor which version he was using now.
If the OP wants help on translating 2003 commands to 2007 commands, he could
try:

Some hints on 2003 to 2007 command mapping:

May I suggest that instead of 'getting the coat' to hit [F5] - before
replying - in order to refresh the page and to read previous replies [you may
also try them out...]
