Using 2007, cannot open old 2003 files

Some of the files I am trying to open have been created with a very old
Excel, possibly .wks, although the mapping shows 1997 - 2003. I am getting
an error message that the format is unrecognizable and I know that 2007
cannot read .wks. I have been told there might be a patch, but could not
find it.

Your help would be appreciated!

Excel and Works are two different programs, although you could save Excel
workbooks as *.wks files.

What are the file extensions of the files you are trying to open?

If actually *.wks you cannot open in Excel.

There is no patch.

If the files are 97 - 2003 *.xls Excel files they should open in 2007

Perhaps they are just corrupted?

OpenOffice.Org's Calc program can open wks files, which you can then
save as Excel files.

The program is free, but it's a big download.
