averaging a cell

I have categories A thru G that are scored 1 thru 10. I have about 50
participants that have scored. I want to find the average of category A and
then the average of B and so on. I first put the categories down the left
column on the excel sheet and the nmbrs used to score across the top. Then I
tried a formula at the right hand side. I tried using ones in each cell that
was scored, but it averaged as one. I then tried to put in an 8 in each
category that was scored an 8, but if all 50 people scored category A with an
8, I then had to write 400 (8*50). I cannot understand hwo to write it w/o
doing it manually.
The clincher is...I have a meeting in 3.5 hours that I need this info for.
Thank you so very much!!
