Default version of Excel

Hi All........

I have several versions of Excel on my computer at work and each time I get
a new higher version number....it seems to automatically become the default
version that files that I click on open in. This was tolerable untill
XL2007 came along. Now, everything opens in 2007 and I don't want
that.....I want to set the default back to some earlier version, say 2000.
I tried changing the set up in FolderOptions but it didn't seem to take.
Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

hi
for some reason excel recognizes the LAST version instaled as the default
version.
if you want to have another version(earlier?) as the default version then
you may have to reinstall THAT version so that excel will recognize that
version as the last version installed and therefore the default version.
yeah, i know....stupid..... talk to microsoft.

not sure if 2000 has this, but in 2003, i go to help and run detect and repair.
this should reset the default version to open the file type.

the usual disclaimers when editing the registry. you can search and find some
command line strings that will do this, too.

then i create reg keys for the newer versions of office so they won't take
control.

word 2007, for example, add this key and give it a value of 1:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options\N oReReg

then do it for each office app you have installed, like this for excel:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options\ NoReReg

for 2010, use:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options\N oReReg

this should keep the newer versions from re-registering the file type.

I'd try to reregister the version of excel you want as the default before
re-installing.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
"C:\yourpathtowhateverversionofexcelyouwant\excel. exe" /regserver

The /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to excel's factory
defaults.

you need to add the norereg keys, or else when a newer version is launched, it
will reset anything that was done previously.
