Default Deselect a cell in a discontiguous range

If I select a range of discontinuous cells (I.E. A1, A3, A5, A8), how can I
deselect "A5" withouth deselecting all cells and then having to then select
all cells except "A5"? (This scenario is vastly simplified).

Thanks!
