Excel 2007 Group and Outline - Why crashing so much?

I am very used to using Group and Outline. In Excel 2003, it used to often
tell me "Cant shift object of the sheet.." or something to that effect, which
I learn to get past mostly by increasing the zoom and/or widening columns.

In Excel 2007, it does not come up with that message anymore. No- it just
crashes without any warning ....

I'm thoroughly fed-up with this new offering. I can't even count the hours
I've lost through this most annoying bug. It does not seem to happen with
rows. It seems to only happen when expanding or contracting columns, and only
after I had been working for a while without saving. I've learnt over time
that I should first "save" every time before I attempt to click on my level
indicators in the top left corner, but of course I don't always remember to
do this first with catastrophic results every time. Like the two hours' or so
of work I've probably just lost while Excel is still trying (unsuccessfully
after about twenty minutes) to recovery my work.

What can be done? I have run every diagnostic in the book (CPU, memory,
programs etc) to no avail. I have a supposedly fast computer (T9500) and 2GB
of RAM. Do I need more RAM? What are others' experience?
