I save an Excel 2003 workbook as a template (i.e., FileSave AsTemplate -
giving it an .xlt extension). Later, when I "open" the template, it opens as [template_name]1.xls - a workbook. This is what I want it to do. Since my IT dept installed my new computer, it now opens as the template, and saves as the template. This defeats the purpose of having a template. Any ideas what's going on? I'm using XP. |

I would re-register Excel and see if that helped.
Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar 1) StartRun "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)OK. 2) StartRun "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)OK. See the space between exe and /regserver You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe. In that case StartRun "H:\yourpath\excel.exe" /regserver(quotes required)OK. How are you opening the file?
Are you doubleclicking on it in windows explorer? Or are you using File|open inside excel? Or are you using File|New inside excel? I'm guessing that you're double clicking them in Windows Explorer. If that's true... Close Excel and Windows Start Button|Run excel /unregserver then Windows Start Button|Run excel /regserver Then test it out. If that doesn't work... Close excel start windows explorer tools|folder options|file types tab scroll down to the xlt extension click the advanced button click on the New item in the Actions box click set as default (ok your way out) If the default action was set to Open (bold indicates default), then that could have been the problem. 4n6DNA wrote: I save an Excel 2003 workbook as a template (i.e., FileSave AsTemplate - giving it an .xlt extension).
