Excel 'read only, compatability mode'

I just started an online course for an accounting class. Last week I was able
to download the homework, edit it (complete the work), and upload it back to
my instructor.

Today I downloaded the homework and I am unable to edit now. It says 'read
only, compatibility mode'

I have windows vista and would like to be able to work on excel and
powerpoint. I got the free trial of Microsoft Office 2007 when I bought this
PC. I'm looking for a download of Office 97-2003 but all I can find are
updates.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

It sounds like your free trial may have timed out on you. First, for the
Genuine Microsoft Office use you might look at purchasing the Home and
Student version of Office. It has the basic applications, is priced fairly
reasonably and has good licensing scheme.
If the budget doesn't permit the purchase, then look at Open Office. It is
a free alternative to MS Office and the files are compatible back-and-forth.
The big catch can be in the area of Macros -- those are not compatible across
Office/Open Office.
