Problems with excel spreadsheet

Using excel worksheet my text has turned to heiroglyphics when I saved it.
Why is this happening? I can't make it return to normal text.

sounds like a font problem. highlight the sheet and from the menu bar-
format/cells/font and change it to something standard, like times new roman
