Why can't I open an excel file with my excel?

I have excel on my computer and received an excel file through my email. I
cannot get it to open. All I get is a bunch of symbols. What can I do?

Not knowing your version of Office or your email client...........

Earlier versions of Outlook and Outlook Express required that Excel
attachments be sent in "Plain Text" rather than "rich text format"

If sent in RTF the files would open with the bunch of symbols showing.
