Collecting data from multiple files
 
Let's say I have 30 daily reports of sales each in a seperate XLS file and I
want to make a new worksheet that will have a 30 row list getting from each
file only the date and daily sales figure.
How do I do that?

You need to use a macro to do this. Refer the below link by Ron de Bruin on
merging a range from all workbooks in a folder (below each other)

There is no way to do it with XLS pivot table or consolidation?

If you are looking at data summarization (like total sales for a day); then
yes you can do this with Pivot Table..Refer
