open xls file error: data may have been lost
I click OK on the error message "File error: data may have been lost" and
then save it as a xlsx and it opens OK. Please advise if there is a way to allow it to be save as a xls without the error message or indicate why the error is occurring. |

Do you also have problems with this file if you open it in Excel 2003 ?

I do not have Office 2003 only Office 2007. However in our environment we
have both Office 2003 and 2007. Try to test the file first on a 2003 version.

This may be unrelated but I have noticed that the file size increases when I
save the file. I am doing much copying and pasting from one spresdsheet to another which may cause the problem. The size goes from 12 MB to 98 MB. Is this normal? Will be testing the file in 2003 version tomorrow. Another point, when I break the file up into separate workbooks for each worksheet, the problem appears to go away. The excel file was opened in Excel 2003 with the same results as in Excel
2007. The file has the error: "File error: data may have been lost" On the other question in regard to deletion of cells in excel being remembered, which makes sense as to why the file grows so much. Is there a way to prevent Excel from remembering the deleted cells? Try to rebuild the file Copy all sheets to a new workbook Right click on a sheet tab and choose select all sheets Rigt click on a the sheet tabs and choose Move or Copy You have a option to copy the sheet to a new workbook here Also drag and drop the code modules to the new workbook (do not forget the code in the This workbook module if you have that) way to prevent Excel from remembering the deleted cells? If you press the delete button it will only delete the content and not for example formatting. So Excel think that there is something in that cell.
