Find and Replace function not working

I have three different list of customers, actually one list that is set up
based on different criteria, (#1 name, #2 address, #3 salesman). Each list is
set up so that each beginning letter is seperated as such;
A
Adams
B
Bobby

On one list, the "find and replace" feature works perfect, the next one it
works sometimes, not all the time, and the last list it does not work at all.
What is the problem? And how do I fix it?

Thanx

How are your lists built?, are they created by formula or is it a table?
has the data been imported?

It's quite possible that you have leading spaces or similar problem.

I guess you would call it a table, I entered it by hand. Here is a cut &
paste of the list, (I have changed sensitive data), however I have put in a
data filter function, that you can not see, on the line that has "name phone
etc"So I have added an "^" here to represent that. I am showing grid lines,
and have "conditional formated" so that every other row is shaded.

Name^ Phone #^ Address^ City^
A
Allen Jeffery 555-5555 226 Market St Apt #28 Detroit
Arnold Mary 555-5555 123 Street Miami
B
