We have a master excel file that I do not want overwritten. I always want it
saved under a different name. How do I do this? Would I make it "read
only"? Thanks.

Yes.

Under Save-As, go to Tools-General Options. Use a password to open, with
read-only recommended activated. That would force everyone except the
editor(person with password) to open the file in read-only mode.

Rita,

Save it as an Excel Template (with an .xlt extension) - it is one of the options under the filetype
in the save as dialog. When someone opens it, any save defaults to a regular workbook.
