Months / Dates in Pivot Tables

Hi,
I have a PT with about 300 records, each record has a date in the format
dd/mm/yyyy - how do I get my PT to group dates into months so that I can
either count or sum the records created within a month - I think I need to
group them somehow but can't see how I do this.
