Pivot Tables-Text Values?

Hi,
I have a huge Excel 2007 report that I'm using a Vlookup to find a matching
variable. I would like to use a pivot table to run a formula off to find the
matching variable but my variable is not numeric. Is there any way to run a
pivot where the values can be text? Thanks.
