Formatting time
 

I'd like to enter running times in minutes and seconds into Excel 2003 to
keep track of it.

I can make a mask such as 00":"00 but then if I enter 16:40, Excel sees it
as 1640 rather than 16 minutes and 40 seconds.

How do I get Excel to format my time as mm:ss and see it as 16 minutes and
40 seconds rather than as a date and time?

I'd like to be able to use formulas and graphs with this, so Excel needs to
view it as minutes and seconds as well as just display it visually.

To get 16:40 type in 0:16:40. To see for instance 1h 6min and 40sec as 66:40,
type in 1:4:40 and format the cell as [hh]:ss

If I type 0:16:40, Excel sees that at 12:16:40 AM. Any other ideas?

Format 0:16:40 as [hh]:mm, too. Should work.

sorry, i meant [mm]:ss, in both cases, not [hh]:ss

Using [hh]:mm will view it as hours and minutes though, and I want to be able
to use formulas and graphs, so time as minutes and seconds must be maintained.

I mistyped it, I corrrected myself in the meantime. Sorry for that, should be
[mm]:ss. If you do not want PM/AM, select different format type or create
custom one (without showing PM/AM). [mm]:ss format means, that for instance
65min and 15 sec u see as 65:15 instead of 1:05:15 (one hour 5 min and 15
sec). If u are always less than 1 hour, format mm:ss is just fine.
